Lumens Auto to improve the safety of PHV Drivers

Beginners guide to PHV

BEGINNERS GUIDE TO PHV

For some becoming a private hire driver is a good source of income, whether it is full-time or part-time. However, there are some of us who might find the requirements of becoming one either too tedious or troublesome, this guide seeks to break down some of the complications for those who are just starting in this industry.

1) Get the Private Hire Car Driver’s Vocational Licence (PDVL)

To qualify for one, you must first own a Class 3 or 3A license for minimally 2 years at the point of application. Afterwards, a medical check-up is required before you register and attend a mandatory PDVL course.

The course costs $145 and is offered at either the Singapore Taxi Academy (STA) or at ComfortDelGro Taxi. The cost covers course materials and 2 test papers and would take around 10 hours to complete.

If you already own a taxi driver vocational license, you do not need to get a PDVL.

2) Get a car

If you plan to be driving PHV full-time, 10 hours a day, 6 days a week, having a car with top fuel efficiency is a crucial factor to consider when deciding on your car model. Hybrid models such as the Toyota Prius, Hyundai Ioniq, and Honda Vezel are renowned for their fuel efficiency and long-term cost savings.  industry.

Full-time drivers can also consider MPV models such as the Toyota Sienta, Toyota Noah, or even the Honda Freed to name a few in our fleet. Such models offer drivers with additional service options, allowing you to accept trips with more than 4 passengers.

However, if you plan on driving part-time, there are also vehicle recommendations as well! Car models like the Toyota Wish and Mazda 3 are relatively cheaper in rent.

Part time drivers who plan on using their cars for personal purposes can consider requesting for brand new cars, while the price would definitely be higher than mileage cars, the upgrade is definitely worth it. With new cars, you can choose to opt for longer-term contracts (12 or 18 months).

You may want to consider renting your car from businesses that exclusively allow drivers to drive for a private-hire company, to avoid the trouble of switching the insurance coverage to commercial. Renting from companies like Lumens allows drivers to drive with a peace of mind, since they have additional services built into their package such as:
